An 1800 Miles Road Trip To Bar Harbor, Maine.
Taking a road trip once or twice a year is a regular endeavor for most of us, however, sometimes the destination can be a hugely ambitious location. This was our road trip when we decided to drive from Oklahoma to Bar Harbor, Maine, and back, and what a memorable experience that was!
Why Bar Harbor, Maine you ask? Honestly? Because of a video game. 🎮 No, really! In Fallout 4, there is a location in the game called Far Harbor that contains a fairly (albeit loosely) accurate map of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park, in Maine. It was because of playing this game that got us to look at Maine for real. We did a lot of research (YouTube) and decided to make a road trip out of it.

While on our way to Mount Desert Island, we stopped at Portland, Maine. I got a few obligatory drone shots while there and we chose to eat at Eventide Oyster Co. From Brown-Butter Lobster Rolls to Kimchi Ice Oysters in a Half Shell (Yes, that’s a real thing!), we made sure to try as much as we could because seafood here is the real deal.

We had planned ahead to eat at Eventide Oyster Co and we got in line early in order to try their well-known Brown Butter Lobster Rolls. We were not disappointed!
Spending a few days in an enchanting port town that’s rich in culture, history, and lobsters!
We finally made it to Mount Desert Island and Bar Harbor, and of course, the obligatory aerial drone photo was needed. This was not only for our trip portfolio but we also wanted to get an idea of how this charming Maine town looked like from the air. Photos and videos online about this place are nice and helpful but nothing can beat being there and seeing it in person.
One of my favorite aerial shots would be Bar Harbor just off of the main dock. This charming town looks great from a bird’s perspective.

While we didn’t stay at the Bar Harbor Inn & Spa I captured a nice aerial drone photo of the hotel as it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. What a beautiful shot if I do say so myself.
The smell of lobster filled the air no matter where you were, at least when we were at the main “L-shaped” section of Bar Harbor. The aroma was great when we first got there, but by the time we left, the smell was kind of overwhelming. It certainly wasn’t enough to put off our experience but we had so much fresh seafood while we were there that we were a little sensitive to the scent of it after a while.
We picked Stewman’s for our dinner in Bar Harbor, and the food was amazing. It’s located right on and over the water and has multiple levels to it.

There were a lot of restaurants that were partially/mostly over the water, which made it extra cool to dine there. Stewman’s Restaurant had great food, great staff, and an overall great experience.

There were many things to choose from on the menu but we decided on a whole lobster with corn, mussels, and potato’s. As an appetizer we chose lobster bisque and clam chowder. For dessert we indulged in blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Delicious!
We both got the whole Lobster meal, which was GREAT but I wasn’t a huge fan of trying to get meat out of all the small legs and places. It ended up being super messy.
We walked up and down the main L-shaped strip in Bar Harbor visiting shops, restaurants and charming foodie cafe’s.
At Bar Harbor’s main tourist areas, you’ll find so many places to shop, eat, drink, and various cultural activities you can check out. Considering it was late August when we were there the weather was just right for walking around. There were lots of cars on the road making it difficult to find parking, but we managed and got a good walk in.

This was one of my favorite drone photos that I captured while we were on Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The views were stunning and the air was so fresh. It was hard to believe that we were literally as far east as you could go as far as up the coast towards Canada.
This was at Sand Beach on Mount Desert Island. It is a relatively small beach a few miles from Bar Harbor. The water wasn’t that vibrant blue or turquoise color that you see in tropical beach areas, but it was a cool area to see nonetheless.

Our trip to Bar Harbor was actually cut really short due to Hurricane Henry that was coming up the eastern coast. We didn’t realize it was going to move that far up towards Maine before moving out to sea, but it did. Since we were not familiar with that part of the country at all we didn’t feel comfortable at the thought of getting cut off from returning home should the Hurricane cause widespread damage in the areas that we drove through to get to Maine.
Despite having our road trip cut short, we were able to visit some of the places we had planned to see like Sand Beach. We had an amazing time and will be returning as soon as possible to this amazing place. There was a lot on our to-do and to-see list that we will have to make up for on the next trip. We will most likely fly on our next trip and rent a car rather than put another 3300 miles on our car. 😁
